Skopje’s Ottoman Mosque Stands the Test of Time

Located in North Macedonia’s capital, the 15th-century Sultan Murat Mosque stands as a stunning testament to resilience, having survived three fires, two major earthquakes, and four wars. Following a comprehensive 2019 restoration, the historic Ottoman landmark now proudly showcases breathtaking 400-year-old original paint and rare 200-year-old calligraphy plaques. Liman Ismail, the mosque’s imam of 14 years, highlighted its unique heritage, noting the presence of a historic imperial seal and a rare inscription featuring verses from the Surah Al-Fath. For international visitors, the site offers a profound glimpse into history, with tourist Melih Özmen describing the perfectly preserved aesthetic as “stepping into a time tunnel” to witness a masterpiece repeatedly “reborn from the ashes.”
