Slovakia’s Fico to Veto EU’s Russian Gas Ban Plan

Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico has rejected the European Union’s plan to phase out all Russian gas imports by 2027, calling it “economic suicide” and vowing to veto the proposal.

Speaking alongside Deputy PM Denisa Sakova, Fico criticized the EU’s push to ban new gas contracts with Russia and end existing LNG imports. He argued the move would raise gas prices and harm Slovakia, which has a gas deal with Russia valid until 2034.

Fico, who visited Russian President Vladimir Putin in December, is expected to be the only EU leader attending Moscow’s Victory Day event on Friday.
