Tanker Leak Threatens Coral Reefs in Philippines

A tanker carrying 800,000 liters of industrial fuel sank off Mindoro Island, south of Manila, causing a leak that has spread to the shore and holiday areas on neighboring islands. The leak poses a threat to the region’s habitats and corals, which span 26 specially protected areas and approximately 26,000 hectares of coral reefs in 7 different states. In response, the Ministry of Health has issued rules for coastal cleaning, and fishing activities in affected areas have been banned. Efforts are underway to extract the fuel safely from the sunken tanker, which is located approximately 400 meters deep, with meetings held between oil company officials and technical experts.
