The first intestine transplant from deceased donor in World

The first ever intestine transplant from a deceased donor was performed on 13-months-old girl Emma, who was suffering multiple organ dysfunction, in the La Paz Hospital in Madrid, Spain. The operation was carried out with a system that maintains blood flow in the organs and protects them after the donor’s death.

The health status of Emma, who had stomach, spleen and pancreas transplants in addition to her liver, was stated as “At home with her family, in excellent condition”.

The transplant coordinator of the hospital, Belen Estebanz, said that the transplant operations were possible only because of the generosity of the families who said “yes” to organ donation.
