Traditional Jereed Takes to the Snow in Türkiye’s Erzurum

Jereed, a traditional equestrian sport with deep roots in Turkish culture, transforms into a winter spectacle in Erzurum, where recent snowfall has provided an opportunity for both villagers and professional athletes to engage in this ancient game. Athletes from Şengel Equestrian Sports Club, champions of the recent Equestrian Jereed Turkish Championship, showcased their skills on the snow-covered field. Gökhan Korkmaz, a team member, emphasized that the snowy weather adds to the enjoyment, stating that jereed is a way of life for them, and they uphold this ancestral sport year-round. Even 9-year-old Esila, part of the Korkmaz family, expressed her love for horse riding and aspirations to become a skilled jereed thrower in the future.
