trial of Russian soldier adjourns until Monday

The trial of 21-year-old Russian soldier Vadim Shishimarin, who killed a Ukrainian civilian in Sumi, Ukraine, on February 28, continued in Kyiv. The Russian soldier, who was on trial for the murder of 62-year-old Ukrainian Alexander Shelipov, gave a new statement at today’s hearing. Confessing his guilt by repeating his previous statements, Shishimarin said, “I see this as an unacceptable and punishable situation. I do not deny my guilt. The first order was given by a lieutenant named Makeev. At first, I refused to fulfill his order. He repeated his order to me with loud and threatening expressions. “There was a stressful situation. Ukrainian Alexander Shelipov was constantly shouting. I followed the lieutenant’s order. After this incident, I wanted to survive. I didn’t want to fight, so I decided to surrender.”

After the defendant’s last statement, the court prosecutor reiterated his demand for a life sentence for the defendant and the hearing was adjourned until Monday by the court committee.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the recent peace talks in Istanbul have brought a new dimension to diplomatic efforts on Ukraine and proposed a leaders’ summit hosted by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. “A summit with leaders from Russia, Ukraine, and the US could help achieve a long-term ceasefire,” he said.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Kyiv with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Fidan emphasized Türkiye’s ongoing diplomatic efforts, stating that President Erdoğan has been working actively since the war began. He added that talks in Istanbul on May 16 led to concrete results, including a prisoner swap.

Fidan shared insights from his prior visit to Moscow and said Russia is open to further talks on June 2. He stressed the importance of continuing momentum and involving international actors to build common ground for peace.

Fidan is also scheduled to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Andriy Yermak, Rustem Umerov, and representatives of the Crimean Tatar and Gagauz Turkish communities.
