Hours after US President Donald Trump signed the decree that would impose additional customs duties on imports from Canada, Mexico and China, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced at a press conference in Ottawa that customs duty would be applied to imports from the US.
Noting that a 25 percent customs duty would be applied to imports worth 155 billion Canadian dollars from the US, Trudeau stated that the customs duty imposed on products worth 30 billion Canadian dollars would come into effect on Tuesday, while the customs duty imposed on products worth the remaining 125 billion Canadian dollars would come into effect 21 days later.
Telling Canadians to buy domestic products and vacation in their own country instead of the US, Trudeau added, “We don’t want to be here, we didn’t ask for this, but we will not back down in standing up for Canadians.”
