The aftermath of the devastating earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş on February 6 in Türkiye continues to unfold, with newly revealed images capturing the moment when ‘Sahil’ apartment building in Iskenderun district, Hatay, collapsed. The building, consisting of two 6-floor blocks, tragically claimed the lives of 65 people. The images showcase the severity of the disaster, leaving only debris where the building once stood.
Survivor Arzu Yavuz recounts the harrowing experience, stating that Sahil and Eda apartment buildings collapsed within the first 10 seconds of the earthquake, resulting in brutal fatalities. She hopes such a tragedy will never befall anyone else and estimates that only one person survived. Another eyewitness, tradesman Çağrı Gürpınar, notes that the two buildings crumbled in the first 15 seconds of the earthquake, emphasizing their age as a factor in their inability to withstand the quake’s intensity. The death toll is estimated to be between 60 and 80, with only 4 or 5 survivors pulled from the apartment rubble.
