British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Foreign Minister Penny Wong, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced their countries’ formal recognition of Palestine. The leaders said the move aims to preserve the possibility of peace and a two-state solution.
Starmer declared the UK’s recognition “to rekindle hope for peace,” while Albanese and Wong said Australia was acknowledging the Palestinian people’s right to statehood. Carney said Canada’s step counters Israeli settlement expansion and offers partnership in building a peaceful future for both peoples.
The announcements come ahead of the UN General Assembly in New York, where France and Belgium are also expected to declare recognition.
