UNESCO-listed Moai statues damaged in fire in Chile

A fire in Rapa Nui National Park severely damaged Moai statues built 500 years ago by locals on Easter Island, known as “Rapa Nui,” 3,500 kilometers from the west coast of the South American country Chile. The damage to the stone statues, according to Ariki Tepano, is “irreparable.” It was stated that the fire ash covered more than 100 hectares, and the efforts to control the fire were hampered by the inadequacy of the teams.
The island is home to over a thousand statues, including 386 at Ranu Raraku.
