US-led Coalition Thwarts Houthi Attacks in the Red Sea

Amid escalating tensions in the Red Sea, the US-led coalition, formed to safeguard against Iran-backed Houthi threats in Yemen, intercepted and neutralized 12 kamikaze UAVs, 3 anti-ship ballistic missiles, and 2 cruise missiles within a 10-hour span. The strikes, attributed to the Houthis, targeted the southern Red Sea, but no ships were harmed, and no injuries were reported, according to US Central Command (CENTCOM).

A statement from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) affirmed sightings of missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles, with reported explosions near ships in the Red Sea, near Yemen’s Hodeidah city.

The Houthis claimed responsibility for the attacks, citing an assault on a commercial ship, the MSC UNITED, alleging lack of response to warnings. Additionally, they claimed an attack on Israel’s Eilat city, north of the Red Sea, using kamikaze UAVs. The Israeli army confirmed the neutralization of the approaching air target.

Following increased Houthi assaults on commercial ships in the Red Sea, a multinational coalition, spearheaded by the US, was formed last week to counter these attacks.
