Van Gogh’s hidden portrait discovered beneath older painting

A hidden self-portrait of the famous Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh, one of the most recognizable and influential figures in the history of Western art, has been revealed. Before an exhibition, employees of the National Gallery of Scotland noticed that there was a hidden portrait of the artist in Van Gogh’s “Head of a Peasant Woman” which was X-rayed. According to the gallery’s statement, the self-portrait, dated 1885, was discovered to be hidden behind layers of cardboard and glue after the “Head of a Peasant Woman” X-rayed ahead of upcoming exhibition. It was emphasized that work will be started to reveal the self-portrait, which can now be seen with X-ray scanning.

The self-portrait will be exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh.
