Victims of April 9 tragedy memorialized in Georgia

On 9th April of 1989, 21 people had died as a result of the intervention of the Soviet army on citizens who held a rally for independence in Georgia. Today on the 33rd anniversary of the massacre, the victims of the disaster were memorialized in front of the Parliament building in Tbilisi. Meanwhile, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and cabinet members with government representatives and other officials attended the commemoration ceremony held at the 9 April Martyrs’ Monument. During the ceremony, Garibashvili and other officials left flowers at the 9 April Martyrs’ Monument and lit candles and prayed for those who lost their lives.

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili, leaders of opposition parties, Turkey’s Ambassador to Tbilisi Fatma Ceren Yazgan, Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Tbilisi Faig Guliyev, Georgian Muslims Administration Mufti Etibar Eminov, Georgian Muslims Sheikh Ramin Igidov and ambassadors also attended the commemoration ceremony.

In addition to that, photographs of those who fought against Russia and lost their lives in Ukraine were also lined up at the 9 April Martyrs’ Monument.
