The wreckage of the USS Yorktown, a US Navy ship, and the Akagi and Kaga aircraft carriers from the Imperial Japanese Navy, all of which sank during World War II, has been discovered in the Papahanaumokuakea National Marine Monument area off Hawaii’s coast in the Pacific Ocean. The Ocean Exploration Trust’s research team conducted a five-day expedition, examining these historical relics in detail. This included a first-ever comprehensive study of the USS Yorktown, discovered 25 years ago, and the Akagi, which had not been seen since its 1942 sinking. The research sheds new light on these sites and their historical significance. The Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
