A convoy carrying the remains of 10 newly identified victims of the 1995 Srebrenica genocide passed through Sarajevo today ahead of their burial. Citizens and officials gathered along the route to place flowers and observe moments of silence as the coffins stopped at prominent city landmarks, including the Presidency building and the Memorial to the Murdered Children of Sarajevo. The victims, ranging in age from 20 to 56, will be interred at the Srebrenica memorial cemetery on July 11, marking the 31st anniversary of the massacre that claimed over 8,000 Bosniak lives. Emphasizing the international community’s ongoing obligation, Acting High Representative Louis Crishock stated, “Keeping the memory of Srebrenica and the Srebrenica Genocide alive is a responsibility and a duty to the victims, their families, and both present and future generations.” To date, Bosnian institutions have identified and buried approximately 7,000 victims as the search for those still missing continues.
