Ebola Outbreak in Congo and Uganda Tops 600 Suspected Cases

The World Health Organization (WHO) is tracking a growing Ebola outbreak across the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, reporting roughly 600 suspected cases and 139 deaths. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus designated the crisis as a public health emergency with a high regional risk, though he noted the global threat remains low. Officials expect case numbers to climb as the virus—identified as the Bundibugyo strain, which currently lacks an approved vaccine or treatment—has already begun crossing international borders. In response to the escalating situation, the WHO has deployed specialized support teams to the region and unlocked $3.9 million in emergency funding to aid containment efforts.
