EU’s Borrell Urges Palestinian State for Israel’s Security

During the Union for the Mediterranean forum in Barcelona, Josep Borrell, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, stressed the necessity of a Palestinian state for ensuring peace and security in Israel. He emphasized adherence to international humanitarian law and highlighted the suffering in Gaza, calling for urgent measures to address the crisis.

Borrell expressed concerns about extremist actions, particularly citing the threat posed by settlers in the West Bank. He condemned plans to expand settlements, asserting that peace, not military actions, is vital for regional stability.

Highlighting the significance of peace between Israel and Palestine for the broader region, Borrell discussed the challenges of dealing with ideologies like Hamas. He underscored the need for presenting better alternatives rather than resorting to force to counter such ideas.

Borrell also emphasized the importance of avoiding legal colonization in the West Bank and advocated for the revival of Palestinian authority. He warned about the potential chaos, violence, and migration repercussions in a stateless region, with Europe likely bearing the brunt of such consequences.

Iran Warns Europe Over Nuclear Dispute

0

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Arakchi issued a stern warning to the UK, Germany, and France, accusing them of making a “new strategic mistake” regarding Tehran’s nuclear program. In a social media post, Arakchi said, “Iran will give a tough and determined response to the violation of its rights,” criticizing the European trio for backing a resolution against Iran at the IAEA Board of Governors.

Arakchi condemned the move as baseless, recalling past disputes in 2005 which led to the expansion of Iran’s uranium enrichment. “Have these three really not learned any lessons in the last twenty years?” he said.

Meanwhile, the IAEA reported on May 31 that Iran’s 60% enriched uranium stockpile had grown from 274.8 kg in February to 408.6 kg by May 17. In response, the UK, Germany, and France are reportedly preparing to refer Iran’s file to the UN Security Council, which could activate the “snapback” mechanism and reimpose UN sanctions.
