The Italian excavation team, which continues the excavation and restoration work in the Temple of Apollo in the Hierapolis Ancient City, which is located in the Pamukkale district of Denizli, Turkey has unearthed very important artifacts in this year’s excavations. The remains of the Phrygian civilization unearthed reportedly show that Hierapolis may be the oldest settlement dating back to the Iron Age BC.
Head of the Archaeological Excavation Delegation in the Region, Italian Prof. Dr. Grazia Semararo said, “In this excavation area, there is the whole history of Hierapolis, from Hellenistic to Byzantine times. We are excavating at one point from the Phrygian settlements. The site is home to a very important Phrygian settlement and the oldest settlement that ever existed in Hierapolis. During the Iron Age, in the 7th and 8th centuries BC, the site shows a new history of Hierapolis and the Lykos Valley.”
