In the devastated Gaza Strip, Palestinian engineer Basel Al-Batsh is keeping vital machinery running by forging spare parts from aluminum salvaged from destroyed buildings. After Israeli strikes leveled his original factory, Al-Batsh set up a makeshift tent workshop to produce essential components for cars, motorcycles, and generators. With border closures halting the import of new raw materials, his scrap-metal recycling operation has become a lifeline for meeting the community’s urgent transportation and power needs. His resourcefulness offers a rare glimmer of resilience amid Gaza’s total economic collapse, which has seen commercial activity grind to a halt and unemployment soar to 80 percent.
