Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry Announces Resignation

Leaders of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) convened in Kingston, Jamaica, to address the escalating security crisis in Haiti. Following the meeting, Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced in a video message that his government would resign upon the establishment of a transitional council. Expressing gratitude to the people of Haiti, he urged calm and collaboration for a swift restoration of peace. CARICOM Chairman Irfaan Ali accepted Henry’s resignation, emphasizing the agreement on forming an interim presidential council and appointing an interim prime minister.

The situation in Haiti has been marked by chaos since Prime Minister Henry’s departure to Nairobi on February 29. Gang-led unrest, including prison raids resulting in casualties and mass escapes, prompted a 72-hour state of emergency and curfew. With ongoing violence and gangs controlling a significant part of Port Au Prince, Prime Minister Henry, currently in Puerto Rico, remains unable to return due to security concerns.
