Silence in Antakya’s Historic Bazaar in Quake Aftermath

The historical Uzun Bazaar in Antakya, once a bustling center of trade, is now marked by silence and somberness after sustaining damage from a devastating earthquake of 2023. Of the 1,700 businesses in the 3.5-kilometer-long bazaar, some were severely damaged or destroyed. Tradesmen, returning to rebuild after the earthquake, have reopened their establishments. Formerly a vibrant hub for Ramadan shopping, the bazaar currently witnesses a subdued atmosphere, with decreased footfall compared to previous years. Local traders express hope for recovery, noting a gradual return of customers, but acknowledge a noticeable decline in activity during the initial days of Ramadan.
