Latvia removes monument commemorating victory over Nazi

Latvian government keeps removing the historical structures belonging to the Soviet Union era. The 79 meters tall monument in Victory Park, Riga, symbolizing Red Army’s victory over Nazis is brought down. The 37 years old monument is removed for reminding the unpleasant memories of war.

“This monument was a steady reminder of our occupation and the associated fate of many people: deportation, repression, and so on. We do not need this kind of monument, “says Latvian President Egils Levits.

Russian minority in Latvia had protested the removing decision for that thousands of Russians used to keep the monument as a gathering point for celebrating the victory of 1945 obtained over Nazis on every may 9th.
