Palestinian activist Omar Almaani was detained by police in Antwerp, Belgium, while driving a caravan displaying messages supporting Palestine and figures on civilian casualties in Gaza. Antwerp police said he was detained for disturbing public order after repeatedly driving through the city’s Jewish quarter. Police spokesperson Kim Bastiaens said the vehicle had also been impounded for up to six months. Almaani denied deliberately provoking residents, saying he had entered the area by following his GPS while dropping off relatives after a family dinner. “I didn’t know the area at all, nor did I know it was a Jewish quarter,” he said, questioning why he would deliberately seek attention at 2 a.m. when most people were asleep.
