South Korean President Defends Actions at Impeachment Hearing

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol defended his actions during an impeachment hearing at the Constitutional Court, rejecting charges of rebellion and abuse of power. Addressing the court, Yoon emphasized his commitment to liberal democracy and stated that declaring martial law falls within the president’s legitimate powers.

Suspended from office after declaring a six-hour martial law, Yoon appeared under heavy security measures. He urged the judges to evaluate his actions positively, citing his dedication to public service and constitutional values.

The Constitutional Court has 180 days to decide whether to uphold the impeachment approved by the National Assembly. If confirmed, South Korea must hold elections within 60 days. The next hearing is scheduled for January 23.
