Typhoon Koinu Strikes Taiwan, Leaving a Trail of Destruction

Typhoon Koinu struck Taiwan with destructive force, causing widespread damage. The Category 4 typhoon brought heavy rains and winds of up to 252 kilometers per hour to the Hengchun peninsula, resulting in 190 injuries. Orchid Island in the southeast witnessed vehicles being thrown by strong winds and fishing boats sinking. Major airlines and ferry services were canceled, but high-speed train services continued. Business and education were suspended for a day in affected cities. The typhoon is expected to linger until tomorrow before weakening as it heads toward China’s Guangdong province.
