Venezuela Quake Death Toll Tops 1,400

The death toll from the devastating 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24 has climbed to 1,450 as international rescue operations continue. Search teams are working relentlessly in the hardest-hit coastal state of La Guaira, where rubble fills the streets and tens of thousands remain missing despite the rescue of 33 survivors over the weekend.

National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez announced the grim updated statistics, adding that the twin tremors have left 3,150 injured and displaced over 12,700 residents across 774 destroyed buildings. Highlighting the ongoing recovery, Interim President Delcy Rodriguez stated that debris removal is continuing and announced the creation of a presidential commission to assess building safety. She also confirmed that local education is temporarily suspended, though electricity in La Guaira has successfully been restored to 75 percent.
