Syrian Defense Minister Major General Murhaf Abu Kasra announced a ceasefire in the predominantly Druze city of Sweida, where deadly clashes between Druze and Bedouin groups have killed 99 people since Sunday.
Abu Kasra stated that the ceasefire was reached after talks with local leaders and that only armed provocations would be met with force. Security control will now be transferred to police under the Interior Ministry.
The violence began after Druze groups seized vehicles from Bedouins, triggering kidnappings and armed conflict. The Israeli army struck Syrian tanks en route to Sweida, warning against threats to the Druze population.
