El Salvador has proposed housing criminals deported from the U.S., including U.S. citizens, in its prisons for a fee.
During a three-hour meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, President Nayib Bukele suggested outsourcing part of the U.S. prison system by detaining convicted criminals in El Salvador’s mega-prison, CECOT. Rubio called it an unprecedented offer and confirmed he discussed it with President Trump.
Bukele stated the deal would provide revenue to sustain El Salvador’s prison system, while a U.S. State Department report warns that the country’s prisons are overcrowded and unsafe.
