Hegseth Targets NATO ‘Freeloaders’ at Brussels Summit

The NATO Defense Ministers Meeting has kicked off in Brussels, marked by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth sharply criticizing some of the alliance’s wealthiest nations for continuing an “era of freeloading.” Speaking ahead of the upcoming Ankara summit, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized that European allies and Canada have actually boosted their defense investments by $90 billion over the past year. Despite this massive 20 percent increase, Rutte stressed that member states must present credible roadmaps to reach the alliance’s ambitious new goal of allocating five percent of their GDP to defense. Beyond financial commitments, the ministers are also coordinating international efforts to protect freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Finally, Rutte praised recent US diplomatic breakthroughs, noting that a newly forged agreement with Iran has significantly reduced the threat of nuclear proliferation and renewed hopes for regional peace.
